  • 2 tablespoons butter or stick margarine
  • 2 (4-ounce) links sweet Italian turkey sausage, crumbled
  • 2 cups chopped onion
  • 2 cups chopped fennel bulb
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

  • 12 cups (1-inch) cubed French bread (about 1[1-pound] loaf)
  • 1 cup thinly sliced green onions
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
