1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 medium onions, diced
2 (28-ounce) cans whole tomatoes
1 (10 1/4-ounce) can tomato puree
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
Melt butter in a Dutch oven; add onion, and sauté until tender. Add tomatoes and remaining ingredients; cook over medium-high heat, stirring often, 20 minutes.
