Ingredients

  • 1 (16-ounce) package dried pinto beans
  • 7 cups water
  • 1 pound salt pork, diced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, sliced
  • 2 teaspoons sugar

How to Make It

  1. Sort and wash beans; place in a large Dutch oven. Cover with water 2 inches above beans; let soak overnight.

  2. Drain beans; cover with 7 cups water. Stir in remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 3 hours or until beans are tender. Spoon into a serving bowl.
