French Toast
This French toast is lower in carbs than a traditional version because it has reduced-carb whole wheat bread and is topped with sugar-free syrup instead of powdered sugar.

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons fat-free milk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 (1-ounce) slices reduced-carb whole wheat bread (such as Arnold)
- 1 tablespoon light butter
- 2 tablespoons sugar-free maple-flavored syrup
Preparation
- 1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a shallow dish, stirring well with a whisk. Add bread to dish; let stand 5 minutes, turning once.
- 2. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add bread slices; cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until browned and crisp. Serve with sugar-free syrup.
- Note: The bread we analyzed for in this recipe has 9 grams of carbohydrate and 3 grams of fiber per slice.
