Heat oven to 400º F or a grill to medium-high. Slice French loaf in half lengthwise. Spread the halves with butter. Mince garlic cloves; sprinkle over the buttered bread. Add salt to taste. Put the halves together, wrap in foil, and place in oven or on a grill. Heat until the bread is golden, 15 to 20 minutes.
