How to Make It

Step 1

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan; add onion and garlic. Cook over low heat until onion is tender.

Step 2

Add next 12 ingredients, stirring well. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1 hour. Remove whole cloves and bay leaf; discard. Set sauce aside.

Step 3

Place ribs, 1 tablespoon salt, and water to cover in a large Dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 30 minutes or until ribs are tender. Drain.

Step 4

Place ribs on grill over slow coals. Grill 5 minutes on each side. Brush both sides of meat liberally with sauce; grill an additional 5 minutes on each side. Serve remaining sauce with ribs.
