Five-Grain Cereal with Apricots, Apples, and Bananas

    I wish I'd read the other reviews before making this; they're right about the bananas. Next time I'll try adding the bananas during the final two minutes. Otherwise, this is a good and hearty breakfast.

    This recipe is great! Get whole grain goodness right off the bat. I put it in my crock pot (same as making crock pot steel cut oats) that way it is warm and ready to go in the morning - just add brown sugar or honey. I also do not like the consistency of dried bananas and use another dried fruit instead.

    My boyfriend and I have been trying to eat more non-refined grains, and this is an excellent replacement for boxed/processed hot and cold cereals. I prepare a big batch and store it in the freezer and make two servings every morning. He puts it in a tupperware container and it's still hot 30 minutes later after he gets to work. We add cinnamon and honey or agave nectar to add a little bit of sweetness. I usually skip the fruit, but really any fruit that you throw in here would be good.

    I was never a fan of oatmeal so I tried this version. Excellent. The texture is more hearty than gooey. I would not add the dried fruit next time and instead add it after cooking. The toppings are what make this "oatmeal" truly enjoyable. (milk, brown sugar, crasins, etc..) A fabulous twist to the traditional oatmeal texture and great way to diversify your grains.

    I was unable to find cracked wheat which could be why I give the recipe 3 stars but I enjoyed the flavor a lot once it was completely cool. I added additional fruit including raisins and cranberries but in the future I will prepare it the night before and eat it for breakfast the following day. I would also recommend using fresh bananas so you can still experience the flavor and texture of the fruit. Pretty healthy recipe overall that I will tweak and make my own.
