  • 4 large tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mustard seeds
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons celery seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper


  1. Place tomatoes and onion in a serving dish. Set aside.
  2. Bring vinegar and next 7 ingredients to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Boil 1 minute.
  3. Pour vinegar mixture over tomato mixture. Cover and chill at least 1 hour.
  4. Note: Salad may be prepared in advance and chilled up to 3 days.
