Creole Barbecue Sauce

Yield 2 quarts

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup catsup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large red onion, chopped
  • 6 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons red pepper
  • 2 tablespoons celery seed
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 2 drops hot sauce

How to Make It

  1. Place all ingredients in a large Dutch oven, mixing well. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Use sauce for barbecuing beef, pork, or chicken.
