Chicken with Cider and Bacon Sauce

    Okay, but nothing special. We served roasted potatoes with this, and the sauce was good with those as well. If I were to make this again, I'd use boneless skinless chicken thighs to give a bit more flavor and moisture to the chicken.

    Have made this twice and loved it even more the second time. My husband thought it was great and was surprised it was light. Nice new way to serve chicken. I agree the sauce wasn't quite enough. I'll double it next time and try to thicken it up. My kids like it too and they are picky. ****I'm adding to my review 3 1/2 years later after making this dozens of times. It has become one of our family's favorite CL recipes. I am thinking that those who say the sauce has no flavor did not take the time to let the onions get a bit carmelized and then give the sauce time to reduce. You MUST not rush this step or you won't get the depth of flavor from a nicely reduced sauce. Turkey bacon??!!! Don't do it! You can sacrifice the calories of two slices of real bacon in an entire recipe. It's an essential flavor in the meal. I think this recipe is genius! P.S. I always thicken the sauce with a bit of cornstarch mixed with more apple juice.

    This dish was great and very easy to make. My boyfriend loved it and I will put it in my rotation. I served it over orzo and doubled the sauce like other reviewers said.

    This was good, but the flavor lacked dimension. I added cheese to the leftovers, and it was better that way - adds to the calories and the flavor! :)

    This recipe was quite tasty although, let's be honest, what isn't tasty with the addition of bacon? The recipe was very easy to put together, although the sauce I thought was a little too thin.

    I really did not like the mix of the flavors, onion, bacon, apples. Just not for me. The chicken did come out moist and tender though.

    We loved this recipe. It was easy to make and tasted great. I added some dried cranberries to the sauce and they gave it some extra color and flavor.

    My Boyfriend LOVED this recipe. I thought it was just ok. I used turkey bacon and added a bit of corn starch to thicken the sauce up a bit but I felt that it SERIOUSLY lacked depth. Next time I'll add some Calvados to punch up the flavor more and I'll most likely use thighs instead of breasts.

    I thought onions, bacon, and apple cider would burst through! However, it lacks flavor. It's just alright and it certainly doesn't stand on it's own. I wouldn't want to eat it again but I did eat it while it was on my plate.

    I like this recipe a lot, but I agree with other posters that the sauce is too thin. The flavor is really good, though.

    This was amazing! Based on other reviews, I doubled the liquids in the sauce and added another piece of bacon. I also added a bit of cornstarch to thicken up the sauce. I used the sauce on the chicken and on our green beans. I used turkey bacon, which resulted in less fat in the pan for cooking the chicken, but my cast iron pan is seasoned well enough it wasn't an issue. This was an easy, tasty recipe that I'll definitely do again.

    This was great!!! The only thing I changed was I added a little bit of cornstarch to the sauce to thicken it up a bit. I used Uncle Ben's Long Grain & Wild Rice and made asparagus instead, and it was a phenomenal quick and super easy dinner! Even my honey liked it!. "This one's a keeper."

    I was going to give it one star - because I definitely will not waste my time trying to make it again - but I gave it 2 stars instead because it's not that it tasted bad, it just didn't have much flavor at all. The only thing I could taste was the bacon. The sauce was just weird. There was enough of it, because I only used one chicken breast sliced in half (I only have to cook for 2). But the sauce was thin and flavorless. I think it would have taken at least 20 minutes for it to reduce down enough to thicken and have some cider flavor. I did skip the onions because I despise them, but I added about a tsp of onion powder to the cider/broth mix. Guess I should have used a little cornstarch to thicken this up, but I think that would have made it even more bland. My husband called it "an interesting experiment", and that's about all it was.

    what guy doesn't like bacon and cider? this combination was great and came together perfectly. It was a tad salty for me, so next time I will make sure to get lower sodium chicken broth

    This recipe is really all about the sauce, and the sauce was not good. I'm surprised this got published, and so glad I didn't serve it on a night guests were eating with us. THAT would've been embarrassing!

    I made a few changes to this recipe, but it came out very tasty and I would definitely make it again. First, I put in a LOT more onion because I really like onion, about 1 cup. I chopped rather than minced the onion because I like the texture. Next, I added 2 Tbsp olive oil in with the onion, because after cooking the chicken I didn't have enough fat left in the pan for my third change, which was to add flour. After the onion cooked a bit in the oil, I added 2 Tbsp. flour and cooked for 1-2 minutes, then added the liquids. This made the sauce nice and thick once it had simmered for 5-6 minutes. I think the thickener is essential to making this recipe workable. Lastly, when the sauce was simmering for a minute or two, I added the chicken back and simmered it in the sauce for the remaining time. This added flavor to the chicken while the sauce reduced. A good, solid sauce if you follow the steps above. Would use again for poultry or pork.

    Maybe it was the brand/type of apple cider I used, but my whole house smelled so bad, the kids were completely turned off from supper! Even after the liquid was reduced, all I could taste - and smell - was apple cider. This recipe went into the trash!!

    Love the intense flavor of this dish!! I thickened the sauce a little with some flour. Served with spaghetti squash and cheese bread. Kids loved it also.
