I like to toss the bread cubes in a ziploc with lemon olive oil, parmesan and minced garlic. Great easy casserole dish.

Wow, I don't know where I went wrong with this recipe considering the reviews, but this was by far one of the worst dishes ever prepared from this website. I used the called for cup of a really good dry white wine which turned out to be too much, overpowering the sauce. I tried to tone it down with chicken broth, Dijon mustard, sour cream and a couple of dashes of Worcestershire sauce. It was no use, we tried to eat it, but unfortunately it ended up in the trash. Wish someone else would make it for me - I'd give it a second chance then, but not in my own kitchen. Ugh.

The best recipe I've ever found in Southern Living!! Easy to make but very elegant to serve. My new favorite dish for company. Add a salad and it's a complete meal.

This is one of my family's all time favorite recipes. So easy and perfect on a cold night.

This recipe is one of the best!! We had our friends over this evening who do not like casseroles. They are true Italians!! They absolutely loved this dish!!! I used the fat free mushroom soup, 1/2 cup Pino Grigio, and 1/2 cup low fat buttermilk. I gave my friends the recipe after they raved about it. They remarked on how this should be a company meal!!! I first served an antipasto, white wine, and the casserole. It was a big hit!!! Coffee and Sambuca followed the meal.

My family and I did not care for this recipe at all. The bread topping was very tasty but that was the only part of this recipe I would use again.

The recipe is visually unappealing and the flavor is lacking.

Loved this! Great flavor! I took others suggestions and reduced wine to 1/2 c. and added 1/2 c. buttermilk. Doubling filling tonight for company.

Awesome!! My dinner party loved it. Served it with roasted asparagus and rolls. Making it again 5 days after the last time to use the leftover ingredients. I made it with 1/2 buttermilk and 1/2 chardonnay which made the sauce yummy. If I had to pick something to criticize it would be the temp and length of cooking the onions and mushrooms, but that was probably me and my new stove! Also casserole size was a little low for more than 2 people if you want yummy leftovers; maybe double the recipe and put in 9x13.

Okay, I liked this recipe, but I did several of my own additions. I sauteed the bread and butter together in the skillet until the bread was crispy. As I was cooking the veggies, I also added garlic, salt, pepper and oregano. Instead of white wine, I used 1 cup of chicken stock. I also made my own cream of mushroom soup. My version was very good! I will probably make it again!

I served this dish for a dinner party of 6. I doubled the recipe and had nothing left! I also used sour dough bread instead of rolls. Delicious and everyone left with the recipe. Just served it with a tossed salad. So good and will make again!

I was extremely disappointed in the flavor. This dish is also visually unappealing. Will not be making again.

I love this recipe. It's also super-easy to change up a little to get different flavors. I substitute cream of chicken soup for the cream of mushroom and add a can of (drained) diced tomatoes with oregano and basil instead of the mushrooms. It gives it a totally different taste and is just as easy to throw together.

This is absolutely a wonderful casserole to serve on these cold winter days. It has been a hit whenever I have served it. It is like having the topping of a great French Onion Soup with some chicken in every bite. I have always been asked for the recipe many times over.

This is one of our favorite recipes. I omit the mushrooms b/c my husband does not care for them. I also use less butter and half the wine with some buttermilk. Love it!

I made this recipe and we thought it was too "sour" with the sour dough bread and the buttermilk we don't do wine so maybe that does something to make it a five star dish

I followed this recipe exactly, and was very disappointed with the results. It was terrible!! The taste of wine was overpowering, and the mushrooms and roasted red peppers did nothing to enhance the taste. The only good part of this recipe was the bread topping. I will not be making this again.

This dish took me a little longer to prepare than indicated, but it was worth it. It is even good left over. Just be sure to warm it in the oven with foil over it so that the bread doesn't burn or get to hard.

This recipe is wonderful! My husband was so impressed when I made it for him. It is for sure one of his favorite meals. He requests it all the time.

This has become one of my "go to" dishes! I added a few more mushrooms as we love them and omitted the red pepper. When I make it to give as a dinner gift, I usually sub the buttermilk for the wine but people always ask for the recipe after they have eaten it! People really think I've gone the extra mile when I serve it.

I made as per recipe. Thought it was tasty. I used a Chardonnay....did not find it overpowering. Whole family liked it and they are picky.

I didn't care much for this at all, but my husband enjoyed it. Since I'm the cook, I don't think I would make it again :)

This recipe is a great combination of flavors. Everyone (including 1yr olds) cleaned their plates! And it really doesn't take much time to put together. I put the chicken in a crock pot all day while we were out and about, and then come dinner time I just put everything together; took about 15min. So easy and sooooooo good!

This was really good. I used a Sauvignon Blanc, wine and it did not overpower the dish as others have indicated. Feeling it might be a tad bland as is, I added some minced garlic and dried thyme to the onions. The bread topping was a nice change from the typical pot pie crust and the possibilities are endless. We will be having this one often.
