How to Make It

Step 1

Beat shortening at medium speed of an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well. Add egg and molasses, mixing well.

Step 2

Combine flour and next 4 ingredients, stirring well. Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture, mixing well. Cover and chill 1 hour.

Step 3

Shape dough into 1-inch balls, and roll balls in 1/4 cup sugar. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake at 375° for 9 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets, and let cool on wire racks.
