Cherry Winks

Yield about 7 dozen

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/3 cup drained and chopped maraschino cherries
  • 2 1/2 cups crushed corn flakes cereal
  • Additional maraschino cherries, drained and cut into quarters

How to Make It

  1. Cream butter in a large mixing bowl; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla, beating well.

  2. Combine flour, baking powder, soda, and salt in a medium mixing bowl; sift 3 times. Add to creamed mixture, stirring well; stir in pecans, dates, and chopped cherries, mixing well. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

  3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, and roll in crushed cereal. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets; flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass. Place a cherry quarter on top of each cookie. Bake at 375° for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheets, and cool on wire racks.
