Century-Old French Dressing

1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup vinegar
2 cups olive oil
1 cup catsup
2 teaspoons celery salt
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1 large onion, grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 1/2 ounces blue cheese, crumbled


Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Boil 10 minutes. Stir in lemon juice; boil an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool. Stir in vinegar. Transfer mixture to a large mixing bowl.

Gradually add oil, beating constantly. Add remaining ingredients; beat until thickened and well blended. Cover; refrigerate.
