I loved this cake -- very quick and easy to make, very moist with lots of rich 'carmel' flavor. I added 1/2 tsp almond extract to the batter and used fresh dates that I buy at the local Farmers Market. I made my own applesauce -- I always have fresh apples, but never applesauce. I had no problem with the topping -- don't skip making the topping as it adds a nice crunch and flavor.

the topping on this cake is particularly good. the applesauce makes it nice and moist and everything mixes together quickly.

I didn't care for this recipe although I like all the individual components. It seemed dry and didn't rise very much for me. Cakes, However, are not my best suite!

This was really good! I substituted applesauce for half the butter and used homemade chunky applesauce. I didn't make the topping, I just sprinkled the 1/3 c. almonds on top. I cut the sugar to 1/2 c. Next time, I think I would add 1-2 tsp almond extract to the batter.

Great minds think alike:) I had dates, cardamom pods & almonds I wanted to use and did a search. This cake tastes rich and comforting - yet it's healthier. I love that it's easy adapt to individual tastes. I will definitely make this again. I changed it up a bit: Used 3/4 Cup Coconut Palm Sugar and 1 Cup Copped Dates. Also, added 1/2 cup finely ground almonds to flour. I doubled the Cardamom & Cinnamon - we like lots of spice. Added a teaspoon of Lemon zest & 1/2 teaspoon Almond Extract. I used the topping but substituted an equal amount of Coconut Palm sugar. I think the topping makes the cake so pretty and it's not extremely sweet! I baked for 35 minutes in a 10" round pan and the cake came out Perfect. Moist & flavor-packed! I think this cake could even be made without an electric mixer - it's that easy! I might try it with crushed pineapple or chopped apples in place of applesauce. It's even better the next day! Thanks!
