B.'s Sweet Maple Barbecue Sauce

Yield Makes 5 cups

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 lemon slices
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

How to Make It

  1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; sauté 5 to 6 minutes or until tender. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes, stirring often. Remove and discard lemon slices.

  2. Note: Sauce can be made ahead and kept covered in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
