3 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract


Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a medium-size heavy saucepan. Gradually add milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens. Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in vanilla. Cool slightly.
