Beet Salad With Pickled Herring

4 (16-ounce) cans whole beets, drained and chopped
4 large apples, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped
1 medium onion, peeled and coarsely chopped
2 cups vinegar
20 whole allspice
1/4 cup sugar
Pickled herring


Combine first 3 ingredients in a large mixing bowl; mix well. Add vinegar, allspice, and sugar; stir well. Cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight. Drain. Serve with pickled herring.
