1. Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium eat until shimmering. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic, spices and 1 teaspoon salt and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
2. Stir in ground beef/turkey and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 5 minutes. stir in tomato sauce, broth, vinegar, and sugar and simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes. Season with salt to taste.
