  7. 1/3 cup sugar -- plus
  8. 1/4 cup sugar -- additional
  9. 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  10. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  11. 1 1/2 cups milk
  12. 2 egg yolks -- lightly beaten
  13. 2 tablespoons butter
  14. 2 teaspoons vanilla
  15. 2 egg whites
  16. 2 bananas -- sliced
  17. 1 9-inch prebaked pie shell

  18. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/3 cup sugar with the cornĀ­starch
  19. and salt. Blend in milk, then egg yolks. Cook and stir until mixture
  20. thickens. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Cool to room
  21. temperature. Beat egg whites until soft peaks form; gradually add 1/4 cup
  22. sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Fold into egg yolk mixture. In
  23. pie shell, alternate layers of banana slices and cream filling. Cover and
  24. chill. Top with whipped cream and additional sliced bananas, if desired.
