We were all about the sweet stuff.

We are coming off of a short week rolling right into the weekend again. That means that the grills are hotter than ever cooking the typical suspects, including hamburgers, chicken breast, and hot dogs. Which got me thinking—what exactly IS in a hot dog? I was almost too squeamish to find out myself, but I didn’t need to be. It turns out that hot dogs have beef, pork, turkey, chicken, or a combination of the meats. That’s all I need to know. There is a slew of other ingredients and flavorings that are in the mix, but I’ll leave it up to the imagination while I grab more relish and mustard.

Instead of thinking about hot dogs, I’ll divert my attention to the most important national food holiday that ever existed—Today is National Doughnut Day. Run, don’t walk to your nearest local and national chain doughnut shops to indulge in the sweet and yeasty baked treat. Krispy Kreme is my absolute doughnut spot to frequent, especially when the “hot now” sign is on. I can inhale a dozen of the warmed and glazed delectables in 0.25 seconds. That has to be a world record somewhere.

Another sweet treat that I’m swooning over this week is an over-the-top Peanut Butter, and Banana Cheesecake with Candied Bacon developed by our editor, Darcy Lenz. There are levels to this cheesecake. The crust is made with chocolate gram crackers, while the double-decker filling gives you a bite of velvety, creamy peanut butter and banana pudding-like flavor at the same time. The awesomeness doesn’t stop there...the cheesecake is finished with a caramel sauce that’s loaded with chunks of salty and sweet candied bacon. Can we say calories galore!? And so worth it.

We clearly have a sweet tooth on the site this week, too, because I keep finding great dessert options. I instantly fell in love with a fun and simple ways to use up frozen puff pastry sheets. Puff Pastry Summer Fruit Slab Pie and Puff Pastry Summer Fruit Shortcakes are two easy dessert recipes that utilize the fresh, fruity bounty of summer. Most of the work comes simply by baking the puff pastry, then you simply assemble the fruity fillings. The fruits are soaked in fresh lemon juice that brings out their natural flavors, while the mascarpone cheese and marzipan create a creamy base for the fruits to rest upon. These flaky, rich, and fruit-filled dessert are perfect for entertaining or to bring as a dish to a celebratory gathering.

With all this sugar, I need to get some vegetables and superfoods in my diet. The more well-known, not to mention expensive, nutrient-dense superfoods come immediately to mind such as pomegranate, goji berries, and spirulina; however, the more affordable and just as beneficial foods are at the top of my list (and already in my kitchen). Writer Kimberly Holland breaks down the 11 foods superfoods that fit in your budget and also nourish your body. A few of these ingredients include sweet potatoes, cabbage, brown rice, strawberries, and peanuts. You can easily incorporate these cost-effective elements into your everyday cooking for a more vitamin-rich diet.
