Basil Gimlet

 

Hello, gorgeous.

The Gimlet and all its tart, memorable flavor sprung onto the cocktail scene in the 1920s, when it was basically gin and Rose's Lime Juice, fresh from the bottle. Nowadays, people are getting fancier, or at least fresher, by using fresh lime juice and really great gin. For the summer months, we love ours with freshly crushed basil. It might look like a harmless lemonade, but we know better!

Rumor has it that the Navy is responsible for this tasty concoction. Sailors were dying of scurvy before anyone realized that Vitamin C was woefully deficient in their hardtack diet. Once lemon, then lime juice was introduced with their daily ration of alcohol (for their health!), the Gimlet was born.
