September is officially here. Along with our freshly resurrected obsession for anything related to apples, fall pies, and pumpkin spice lattes, (yes, they're back) it also seems to be the month of hardcore loving on breakfast. There is a clearly disproportionate number of arbitrary food holidays dedicated to the most important meal of the day in September, and we're not mad about it at all. Not at all.
Yeah. That. ^^^^
Food holidays are generally unnecessary and random, but when enough of them line up to create a month-long breakfast food extravaganza, we're willing to come down off our holiday high horse and concede, "Yes, this is a good idea." No matter what time of day you're eating it, breakfast food makes any meal and every meal the most important meal... because breakfast food kicks ass, as I'm sure our friends over at Extra Crispy would agree (they specialize in exploring all things breakfast).
Now, breakfast food's designated chunk of the day isn't always the easiest to accommodate in terms of cooking/sit-down meal-eating. And especially during this hectic back-to-school transition period, sometimes getting anything on the table in the morning can be a feat worth applauding--making it rather difficult to appropriately celebrate breakfast's full glory. But, the good news is, this is obviously a really great time to embrace brinner--i.e. breakfast-for-dinner. Breakfast food is wholly soul-satisfying, and while it requires some time to sit down and eat it (which a lot of us don't have during the AM rush out the door), it's relatively low-labor and not so time intensive to prepare. Thus, a perfect weeknight dinner option.
When I was a kid, seeing the griddle getting pulled out for dinner was like one of the happiest sights in the world. Scrambled eggs were the first thing I ever learned how to cook, and to this day, I still love whipping up breakfast food for dinner (especially these pancakes). Brinner is more than just breakfast food, it's memories.
If you love breakfast food, you're about to have a serious cause for celebration for the next 30 days. And if you don't love breakfast food... well, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe reexamine your priorities. And with that, here are all of the breakfast-related food holidays in September for you to mark on the calendar, along with my recipe suggestions for celebrating:
September 3rd: International Bacon Day
An entire day to celebrate bacon? Sign me up. If you're a little late celebrating this one (clearly we are), that's okay. A belated celebration can still be a good celebration. Especially if you're serving apple pie for breakfast (which you should, this one).
September 4th-10th: National Waffle Week
Whip out that waffle iron, because this week means fluffy, crispy creviced waffles and plenty of awesome syrups and toppings. I have a thing for these toasty, wholesome Chocolate Buckwheat Waffles. P.S. swapping the strawberries for sliced bananas and a little maple syrup is not a bad way to go, either.
September 4th-10th - Biscuits and Gravy Week
Surprise! Maybe we should just claim this as the best week of the year, because in addition to waffles, other sources have claimed the second week of September as Biscuits and Gravy Week. So, when you're all waffled out, that doesn't mean the party is over... that just means it's time to get some biscuits going and gravy flowing. Boom. I think classic sausage gravy is the way to go, but it never hurts to change up your biscuit game. Trying a whole-grain flour, like spelt, in your biscuit making is an easy way to pack some fiber into this decadent dish.
September 26th - National Pancake Day
Not to be confused with IHOP's free pancake day (which is in March) this day is the official celebration of everything pancakes, and should therefore be celebrated accordingly--with stacks and stacks on deck. Pancakes are incredibly versatile and so downright satisfying, of course they merit this entire day of undivided attention. Start with classic and top them as you like, and then branch out with something a little different, like a Dutch baby. This Cinnamon-Apple babe seems like a great way to go.
Ok, ok, maybe your pancakes won't look like that, but the point is--pancakes.
September 29th - National Coffee Day
This is an important day indeed, a day devoted to the OG of energy drinks. Last year, coffee shops across the nation took part in the celebration, from Dunkin' Donuts to Starbucks, and we're betting this year will be no different. Keep an eye out for great coffee deals coming your way this year. Also, you might consider taking this day to do good through your coffee love to good by contributing to Starbucks' charity that donates a coffee tree to farmers in need for every bag of coffee sold in stores. You can also help cut down on waste by purchasing a reusable coffee cup that you can take to coffee shops, like the Joco Cup, which we absolutely love and featured on Earth Day.
So there you have it--breakfast food is clearly calling to you this month. Don't resist. And if nothing else, just watch more clips of pancake artistry. Because it literally never gets old.
