When I moved down to Birmingham, Alabama for my internship this past January my biggest fear wasn’t that I was moving 1,200 miles away from my family and friends, or that I was going to have to start paying rent and doing my own laundry again.  No, my biggest fear was over what I was going to eat.

 

Visions of fried chicken, thick sausage gravy and giant barbecued ribs haunted my dreams.  Was I going to be able to find a sushi place when the inevitable craving hit?  Would my need for a vegetable curry be met?  And would my obsession with everything Mediterranean be met with scorn? 

 

As it turns out, I had little to fear.  Not only are there plenty of Japanese, Indian, and Mediterranean-inspired restaurants (among others) to choose from, but apparently there is an entire Greek community who has been blessing Birmingham with amazing food for generations. 

 

According to the Southern Food Alliance, the first Greek immigrant arrived in Birmingham in the late nineteenth century and opened up one of the first Greek-owned restaurants in 1902.  Since then, Greeks have flocked to the Magic City and have been melding Greek cuisine with southern ingredients in ways that are both traditional and unexpected – but no matter what, they are delicious!

 

I have been slowly making the rounds to the many Greek and Mediterranean restaurants around the city and this past Thursday I decided to try Nabeel’s in Homewood to curb my craving. 

 


This Greek café and market was memorable to say the least.

 

 


This baked feta appetizer was delicious!

 

 


 

And my falafel-stuffed pita with feta cheese, hummus, tomatoes and lettuce was amazing!! (Unfortunately their dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) were filled with lamb so I couldn't order them - so sad)

 

Overall, another great Greek experience in the south!
