"Short" Pastry

pastry for one 9-inch double-crust pie

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
5 tablespoons cold water
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vinegar


Combine flour and salt in a large bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine water, egg, and vinegar; add to flour mixture. Stir with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened. Shape dough into a ball; chill. Use as directed in desired recipe.
