Savory Pole Beans

2 pounds fresh pole beans
1 small clove garlic
1/4 cup cooking oil
1 cup chopped green pepper
6 slices onion
2 teaspoons salt
1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons dried whole basil
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese


Remove strings from beans; cut beans into 1-inch pieces and wash. Set aside.

Sauté garlic in hot oil until tender; remove and discard. Add green pepper and onion to hot oil, and sauté about 3 minutes over low heat or until tender. Add salt, basil, sugar, water, and beans. Cover and cook over low heat for 15 minutes or until beans are tender. Sprinkle with cheese.
