Combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, pepper, garlic powder, and onion in a large mixing bowl. Add milk, 1/2 cup oil, and eggs; stirring until well blended.
Carefully drop batter by tablespoonfuls into deep, hot oil (350°), cooking only a few at a time. Fry 3 minutes or until golden brown. Drain well on paper towels. Serve immediately.
