Fried Green Tomatoes

1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
6 medium-size green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices
About 1/8 cup vegetable oil


Combine cornmeal, sugar, salt, and pepper; stir well. Dredge tomatoes in cornmeal mixture.

Heat oil in a large skillet to 375°; add tomatoes and fry until golden brown on each side. Drain on paper towels.
