Frances Virginia Tea Room Butterscotch Sauce

1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
3/4 cup evaporated milk
Pinch of salt
Pinch of baking soda


Combine brown sugar and butter in top of a double boiler; place over boiling water and cook, stirring frequently, until butter melts. Add evaporated milk, salt, and soda; stir until well blended. Continue cooking over boiling water, stirring frequently, until sugar dissolves and sauce is thoroughly heated. Serve sauce warm over ice cream.
