Date-and-Maple Scones

Tip: Cut dates with scissors or a knife coated with cooking spray.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup chilled stick margarine, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup 1% low-fat milk
3 tablespoons maple syrup
Cooking spray


Preheat oven to 400°.

Combine first 5 ingredients in a bowl; cut in margarine with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add dates; toss well. Combine milk and syrup. Add to flour mixture, stirring just until moist.

Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead 4 or 5 times. Pat dough into an 8-inch circle on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Cut dough into 12 wedges, cutting into, but not through, dough.

Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until golden. Serve warm.
