Cubed Steak With Onion

4 (1/4-pound) cubed steaks
1/4 cup milk
1 cup self-rising flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup shortening
4 (1/4-inch-thick) slices onion


Brush steaks with milk. Combine flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge steaks in flour mixture, coating well.

Heat shortening in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Brown steaks on one side until golden brown. Turn steaks, and place a slice of onion on each piece. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 25 minutes. Cook, uncovered, an additional 5 minutes.
