Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Dissolve soda in buttermilk. Combine flour and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix well after each addition. Add chocolate, beating well. Stir in flavorings.
Pour batter into a well greased 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 25 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 15 minutes; remove cake from pan, and let cool completely.
