Black-Eyed Peas In "Pot Likker"

6 cups shelled fresh black-eyed peas, cleaned (about 3 pounds unshelled)
1/2 pound salt pork
2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
6 cups water


Combine all ingredients in a large Dutch oven; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1 hour and 15 minutes or until peas are tender.
