To cut a fresh melon like cantaloupe into slices, cut the melon in half, lengthwise from the stem end to opposite end.
Scrape out the seeds and discard them.
Cut each half into slices, and, if desired, removed the melon from the rind using a paring knife.
To make melon balls, cut the melon in half crosswise and scrape out the seeds. Use a melon baller to scoop out balls from each half.
