I left food out too long–can I make it safe by re-heating it? 

In a word: NO! It may seem to defy logic, because heat kills harmful food borne germs. But when left out, food can develop new kinds of more heat-resistant toxins. After food is left at room temperature for more than 2 hours, it should be discarded.
