A recent study suggests pregnant women should be eating lots of avocados.

The ultra-popular and addictive fruit (yes, avocados are a fruit) are widely-known to offer amazing health benefits, including an impressive résumé touting more than 20 different vitamins and minerals. Plus, they're high in fiber and loaded with nearly 15 grams of healthy fats.

But they may be of particular importance to new mothers for a few reasons.

The study, published in Nutrients, states avocados contain higher amounts of potassium and folate, key nutrients that are typically under-consumed in pregnant women's diets, than other "nutrient-rich" fruits and vegetables. Additionally, avocados fit within the guidelines for a Mediterranean-style diet, which is known to help prevent the development of maternal diseases in pregnant and lactating women.

Federal dietary recommendations do not currently list avocados as a recommended fruit for pregnant and breastfeeding women, but the article argues they fit perfectly into what constitutes a recommended, "nutrient-rich" diet. Still, more research will need to be done to determine the exact role avocados play in the diet of expectant mothers.Craving guac yet? Here are a few of our favorite, unique dishes made with avocado so you can get your daily fill of America's favorite green fruit.
