Be gone, sawdust with dried fruit pellets

When the weather is freezing, the last thing I want is a room temperature (or worse, chilled) breakfast. I want a hearty, warm meal that’ll make my belly warm all morning long. I want oatmeal. And since we’re talking about me, let me tell you another thing I don’t want: limp, packaged instant oatmeal. Instant oatmeal packets are sawdust with dried fruit pellets. And why is there always so much cinnamon? With the exception of dinosaur egg oatmeal, instant oatmeal is the worst. I propose a redo. Make your own instant oatmeal cups.

Place ½ cup of quick-cooking rolled oats, 1 teaspoon chia seeds, 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed, and ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt into a small mason jar and stir together to blend. If you’d like, add ½ teaspoon brown, granulated, or Demerara sugar. Boom, you’ve done it. 

If you’re looking for a little more flavor in your instant oatmeal, try one of these flavor pairings:

½ teaspoon allspice + 3 tablespoons dried cherries

¼ teaspoon each of cinnamon, ground ginger, and turmeric

1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds + 2 chopped deglet noor dates 

½ teaspoon cinnamon + 1 tablespoon apple chips or dreid unsweetened apple pieces 

When you’re ready to eat, fill the jar with ½ cup boiling water, stir, cover the jar and let it stand for 3 minutes. Alternatively, fill the jar with ½ cup cold or tepid water and microwave the jar (without the lid) for 1 minute, then stir and let the mixture sit for 2 minutes.

You can then jazz up your oatmeal with nut butter, shredded coconut, toasted nuts or seeds, and a splash of milk.
