When Starbucks is announcing new menu items, we can't help but to feel just a little bit excited. From new breakfast options, like sous vide egg bites to a brand new latte flavor, we've got a whole lot to get amped about in the coming year. Here are details on a few of our favorites.
If you’re anything like me, then it probably came as a huge bummer to see your first beloved Starbucks latte of 2017 served to you in its generic, plain white cup as opposed to the cheery, holiday cups from last month. In lieu of this sad return to marketing normalcy, Starbucks has risen to the occasion and given us a slew of new menu items to get seriously excited about in the new year. Lucky for all, we got our hands on some of these cutting edge additions so that you know exactly what to look out for on your next next jaunt over to your favorite Starbucks location.
The first menu item that the Starbucks gods have taken from the soft, pillowy clouds of latte heaven and brought forth to us is the Cascara Latte (not to be confused with Cascada, the wildly popular dance music singer responsible for heart-pumping, infectious beats). The name cascara, which literally translates to “husk” or “shell” in Spanish, references the fact that coffee cherries are grown on trees, and inside of those cherries are the coffee beans.
You can expect a sweet, dark fruity flavor atop notes of maple and brown sugar with this winter weather espresso drink. The syrup for this latte comes directly from the fruit of the coffee cherry, thus yielding a robustly flavored, aromatic latte. If you like to have a little flavor in your coffee but the PSL or a peppermint mocha is just too much sweetness for your fragile palate, then the Cascara Latte will be right up your alley. It's available to the general public January 10th (Starbucks Reward members gained acces January 6th).
As far as food goes, the highly trendy cooking technique, sous vide, has permeated into Starbucks’ breakfast menu, and we couldn’t be more into it. Sous vide basically means that food is vacuum-sealed and cooked in a water bath at a consistent temperature, and this is exactly how they’ve cooked the new Sous Vide Egg Bites. How these frantic baristas will find the time to pull off such culinary excellence between intense periods of latte-slinging, I do not know, but I will not ask questions. What I do know is that these tasty egg bites come in two’s and are available in Bacon & Gruyere or Egg White & Roasted Red Pepper. Both are equally filling and flavorful without being so offensively salty that your blood pressure rises significantly between starting and completing your meal. The egg bites will likewise be available in Starbucks stores starting January 10th.
Next up is two (yes TWO) new spreads now available to enhance your savory food purchase. First, they’ve added an avocado spread that’s essentially a silky smooth guacamole, perfect for slathering on your egg bites or perhaps the classic Spinach, Feta, and Egg White Breakfast Wrap (not a new item, but always delicious). The other spread Starbucks introduced is standard Sriracha, so they’re not necessarily reinventing the hot sauce wheel, but it’s nice that you can add some heat to your breakfast now if you so choose.
Do away with those January blues because Starbucks gave us a light of shining positivity to look forward to in 2017. But seriously, next time you’re heading over for your daily java fix, go ahead and try out some of these new offerings, because they surely did not let us down. “New year, new you, NEW STARBUCKS” might just be our motto for 2017.
